Audio configuration

How to configure microphone and audio settings for recording

Good audio makes or breaks a video. Mont provides simple audio configuration to help you capture clear sound.

Microphone selection

If you have multiple microphones (built-in, USB mic, headset, etc.):

  1. Click the microphone settings icon in the recording controls
  2. Select your preferred microphone from the dropdown
  3. Speak to test—watch the audio level meter respond

Choose your best microphone for voice recording. External USB microphones typically provide better quality than built-in laptop mics.

Audio level meter

The audio level meter shows your microphone input in real-time:

  • Green: Good levels
  • Yellow: Getting loud
  • Red: Too loud (may clip/distort)

Aim to keep your levels in the green-to-yellow range during normal speech. If you see red frequently, move further from the microphone or reduce your system input volume.

Muting the microphone

Click the microphone icon to toggle audio recording on or off. When muted:

  • The icon shows a crossed-out microphone
  • No audio is captured during recording

This is useful when you want to record screen content without narration, or when you plan to add voiceover later.

Audio processing

Mont automatically applies audio processing to all recordings:

  • Echo cancellation – Prevents feedback when your speakers are on
  • Noise suppression – Reduces background noise (fans, AC, etc.)
  • Auto gain control – Keeps volume levels consistent

These features work automatically—no configuration needed.

Audio-only recording

To record audio without video:

  1. Press A to select audio-only mode
  2. Press Shift+R to start recording
  3. Press Space or A to stop

Audio-only recordings are useful for voiceovers and narration that you'll sync with other content.

Voiceover modes

Mont offers two specialized voiceover modes:

Freeze-frame voiceover (press F): Pauses the video at the current frame while you record audio. Perfect for explaining a specific moment.

Overlay voiceover (press V): Records audio while the video continues playing. Useful for adding commentary to existing footage.
